The founders of the USA built the framework for the government intending for it to operate as a Constitutional Republic. Not as a pure democracy.

It is important to remember that the founders feared a system of government which would be dominated by majority rule. In a pure democracy, the majority rules and there is no such thing as a significant minority: there are no minority rights except civil rights (i.e. "privileges") granted by a condescending majority.

Some argue that the US is still a Constitutional Republic that has remained true to the founders' vision. While others believe it is a representative democracy. And yet others argue that the US is now an oligarchy.

If the US had a true Democratic electoral system like most Democracy-based countries do, the results of this election would be the same. Neither Clinton nor Trump got 50% of the popular vote because Johnson and Stein and McMullin and all the write-ins each got some votes. If the US operated like most countries do, there would be a run-off between the two most popular candidates, Clinton and Trump. If you reasonably assume that almost all the Johnson voters would go to Trump in a runoff election and everyone else would go to Clinton, and you also assume that everyone who voted would would vote again, then according to http://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/national.php the total would be 64176997 votes for Trump and 63072753 votes for Clinton. Trump wins anyway. When you start hearing on CNN how Trump lost the popular vote to Clinton, remember that simply counting the popular vote isn't how most countries elect leaders.

And please try to not burn things because you don't like how it went. Civilized adults don't behave like that.
